Section 2. Hygiene, Food, Health, and Safety

  1. Food service: Will a physical exam regarding communicable diseases be required?
  2. Food safety: Pathogens on the surface of a watermelon can be carried to the interior of a watermelon by a knife cut. Would your assistant wash a watermelon's exterior with soap and water carefully before someone puts a knife to it? How will you know if the hired person habitually checks food systems for food safety matters? Will this be part of his or her duties?
  3. Safety awareness: Rehearsal of emergency procedures, escape routes, first-aid, first response to fire event, shutting off: gas, water, electricity. Maintenance provisions for disaster. How will the person be tested for their safety awareness regarding: electricity, chemicals, gasoline, turpentine, propane, and candles?
  4. Security and Privacy
    1. Will there automatic signals be set up for notifying police and fire departments?
    2. Will there be a declared set of actions for cases of special medical emergencies?
    3. How will the employer respond to the personal emergencies of the employee?
    4. Will the employer demonstrate shared preparedness for the welfare of the employee?
    5. Will the employer be able to respond rightly for any emergency that might directly affect the employee; this is a two-directional relationship.

Section 3. Important Considerations

  1. Mechanical actions, skill sets, mindset/psychology
  2. Service standards, customs, observances, taboos
  3. How well will the employee need to remember guests' and associates' names?
  4. Personal guests by employee? Personal sounds, music...
  5. Does the employer have desired insurance covering liabilities related to having a employees, visitors, and workers?

Section 4. Successful Relating

  1. For a butler to do his job properly, he needs to feel respected. Each person needs different things to feel respected. Some interactions are task orientated. Some are relationship orientated. For a butler to be successful, the employer-butler relationship needs to be about both.
We offer coaching for this process.
  2. Goal: For both the server and the served to experience mutual respect and a
better quality of life as a result of the relating.
